Liz Seal Holistic Massage
There are many benefits from massage and the use of essential oils for babies and children. Touch will develop and strengthen the emotional and physical bonds between parent and child. All forms of loving contact are positive, baby massage is a progression of nurturing cuddles. Touch builds bonds of love and trust, and enhances feelings of security, self-confidence and stability, for both parent and child.
The soothing effect of massage on the tiny nerve endings in the skin brings about the release of tension in the baby. The use of gentle, calming essential oils can also help to alleviate skin problems such as nappy and heat rash, and eczema. Gentle abdominal massage can be very effective for digestive problems such as constipation and colic. Massage is also a form of passive exercise, improving mobility and posture. Stimulating the blood and lymph circulation can relieve inflammation and pain. The ‘rub it better’ technique was used by my Mum and, I’m sure, many others.
Massage encourages deep, relaxed breathing, creating a positive effect on mind and body, stimulating the immune system to help keep baby healthy and happy.
Essential oils
Adding gentle calming essential oils to a massage medium such as moisture lotion or carrier oil can multiply the benefits of the massage movements. Care must be taken to observe the correct dilution for small children. The use of quality, true essential oils is important in every situation, but even more important when dealing with the delicate skin of a child. The word ‘pure’ does not necessarily mean that the oil is natural and without synthetic additives, oils should only be used from a trusted and reputable supplier. Consulting a clinical aromatherapist before using any oils for your child is recommended. Baby massage courses are available if you are unsure of the best way to proceed. As a guideline gentle sweeping strokes, towards the heart and slow, circular movements on the tummy in a clockwise direction (as you look at baby) will calm and relax both baby and parent.
Some essential oils can be safe for use for an adult, but too ‘strong’ or ‘aggressive’ for use on small children. Floral oils such as Lavender, Neroli, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and Chamomile are calming and soothing. Citrus oils such as Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Mandarin and Lemon and helpful in calming the digestion. Eucalyptus and Pine are helpful for the snuffly baby.
A blend of oils can be useful in a massage medium or in the bath at bedtime. Oils can also be vaporised in baby’s room, by putting a drop or 2 at most onto a tissue near the bed or cot. A diffuser can be used, but care should be taken when selecting a diffuser for in a child’s room, avoiding candle burners, as these must not be left un-attended. A water diffuser with colour change lights adds a visual element- just make sure the cables are out of reach.
