Geranium Essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens) is a versatile and strongly scented oil. The uses of this oil in perfumery and herbal tradition are widespread and can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians. Geranium was introduced to European gardens in the late 17th century, grows freely in frost free areas and is happy in pots in a sunny spot or on a windowsill. The oil is found in the leaves, just brush past them to release the most wonderful fragrance.
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation. The best quality oils are produced in Egypt and the Reunion Island off the coast of South Africa. There are many varieties of Geranium grown, Pelargonium graveolens is the genus with the most useful essential oil.

Geranium blends well with a wide range of essential oils, especially with the citrus family, lavender, cedarwood and patchouli. For the skin, a useful blend is Geranium, Bergamot and Patchouli, to encourage healing and reduce irritation.
