Going away on holiday should be an exciting experience. But…
The feelings of nausea linked to motion can be debilitating and upsetting, especially when it effects children. I remember going on holiday as a child, Dad having to drive slowly along back roads, while Mum and I walked along the grass verge, waiting for my normal colour to return! We resorted to all sorts of tricks to help. These included getting up at dawn to set off while I was asleep on the back seat (before compulsory seat belts!), a copious supply of polos and freezing with the car windows open. Eventually, Mum and I on a train, meeting Dad and my brother at the caravan park or B&B!! Cars and buses set me off, till I was about mid-teens, when thankfully, I grew out of motion sickness.
Motion sickness is caused by the movement of the vehicle affecting the inner ear. Looking down at a book or mobile device can trigger the symptoms of dizziness, fatigue and nausea. Roughly one third of the population may be affected by motion sickness, some only when exposed to extreme conditions! Some people will be affected only by certain modes of travel, while others struggle with any conflict in perceived motion; what you see conflicting with what your body can feel.
One of the techniques my Mum used for me was to advise that I suck a mint – and get my head out of my book and look where we were going. This definitely helped me, so I came to wonder if there was anything to the mints?
Some of the oils best suited to relieve nausea are members of the Mint family (Peppermint, and Spearmint) and some of our common spices (Coriander, Cardamon, Ginger and Fennel). Any one of these oils might be helpful, for maximum relief I would suggest a blend of 2 or 3 oils. The most effective way to use this blend would be to put a couple of drops on a tissue and keep it beside you to inhale as required. Inhalation is the quickest way to get the essential oil into the respiratory system.
