We have all experienced those times when the flu has laid us low, an unexplained rash makes us miserable or we just feel exhausted for no apparent reason. The cause may be due to a viral infection.
A viral infection is an illness or disease caused by viruses; microscopic agents which cannot grow or multiply when outside a living cell. The virus invades the living cell and uses the chemical machinery within the cell to replicate itself. As such, viruses may be regarded as parasites.
When infected by a virus, the body responds in defense. Symptoms may include pain, fatigue, anxiety and skin rashes. These rashes are usually itchy and irritated.
Generally, in a healthy person, viral infections are self-limiting, ie the body will fight the infection without medication or intervention. However the symptoms can be uncomfortable and distressing, but may be managed and relieved topically. In some cases, viral diseases may lead to more serious complications, especially when an underlying chronic condition may be exacerbated by the virus. In these situations, medical advice must be sought.
The use of essential oils and hydrolats* can boost our immune system. This gives us the tools to fight the infection and to relieve and soothe the symptoms. Anti-viral oils encourage the body to produce more anti-bodies to combat the invading viral cells.
Viruses may effect different areas of the body. For example, the Flu virus will attack the respiratory system. The Herpes virus causes Chicken Pox and Shingles among other infections where the symptoms include fatigue and skin irritation.
The essential oils recommended would all boost the immune system and target the symptoms. Oils for the Flu virus also support lung health and ease the breathing, while those to fight the Herpes virus will soothe and ease the itching of the skin breakouts.
* Hydrolats are the water by-product of steam distillation, the process by which most essential oils are produced. They contain small amounts of the essential oil, usually the smallest particles. This makes Hydrolats very gentle while still being effective. They can be sprayed onto delicate or very sore skin, or added to water for bathing. Hydrolats are safe for the frail, elderly and the very young.
