What is MLD?

Liz Seal Holistic Massage

What is MLDManual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle and rhythmic treatment which can have a powerful cleansing, pain relieving and immuno-stimulant effect.

What does Lymph do?

The lymphatic system is part of the circulation and is closely entwined with the blood system. The lymphatic fluid (lymph) bathes all the tissues of the body, carrying nutrients to and waste products away from the cells. Lymph doesn’t have a central pump, like the heart for the blood, but is moved by pressure from the blood vessels and muscular activity around the lymph vessels and nodes. Reduced movement from a sedentary lifestyle or injury, can lead to sluggish lymphatic drainage, which in turn can contribute to a range of potential health problems.

The lymphatic system’s principle functions are

  • As a drainage system, maintaining fluid balance
  • Removal of waste and toxins from cells and tissues
  • Transporting larger protein molecules back to the blood stream
  • Defence- combatting infection by generating and transporting antibodies (lymphocytes)
  • Absorbing fats (lipids) from the intestines and transporting them to the blood for removal

MLD can be used primarily to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels. It can be effective in treating a range of conditions including oedema (build up of fluids) skin disorders, headaches and migraine, stress, digestive issues, sinus problems, allergies, pre and post-operative tissue congestion and scarring. It can also have a positive effect on a dysfunctional respiratory system, people with low energy and before or after a long-haul flight (chance would be….)

Effects that can be difficult to measure, such as boosting the immune system, generating feelings of health and wellbeing, and reducing stress and tension are also reported as a result of a course of MLD treatment.
