Holistic massage? What does that mean, anyway?People often ask me ‘what is Holistic Massage?’ And why do I call myself an holistic therapist? Put simply, holism is an all-embracing approach, recognising that each of us is an interconnected and entire person. Any treatment considers internal and external factors influencing wellbeing, rather than trying to separate one physical or emotional ‘complaint’ away from the whole. Each of us is unique and may react quite differently to external factors- a holistic approach allows me to offer treatments to take all of these factors into consideration.

Complementary or holistic therapy takes into account lifestyle, sleep, diet, emotional health, posture, stress, work, exercise and family history. I take the view that it is better to look after a client’s health and encourage our amazing bodies own healing mechanisms, rather than try to treat an illness.

Aromatherapy is a wonderful tool in holistic therapy, as the oils have an effect on the body chemistry as well as the aromatic influence on our emotions. Oils which have a specific physical effect will often have a similar one emotionally, for example, oils which are anti-inflammatory for the skin will usually calm and soothe on a psychological level. One of the reasons that I ask my clients to smell a blend before I use it for a massage treatment is to ensure that the oils will have the desired effect for them on an emotional level, as well as chemically bringing about the healing response we desire. If you don’t like the smell of a blend, you’ll find it more difficult to relax….

By bringing about relaxation, our bodies are better able to repair and we feel renewed.
